Caldor Fire: Father, son arrested for allegedly starting wildfire that burned more than 200K acres in El Dorado, Amador counties – Fresno, California

San Francisco (KGO)-Father and son were arrested earlier this year on suspicion of launching a massive Caldor fire that forced tens of thousands to flee the Lake Tahoe area, officials said Wednesday.

El Dorado County District Law Firm David Scott Smith and his son Travis Shane Smith said in a statement that they had been accused of reckless arson in a warrant issued before the formal charges were filed.

Mark Reichel, a lawyer for both men, says that the reckless arson was accidentally ignited, but included “to the extent that it is considered reckless.”

Caldor Fire burned 221,835 acres, destroying more than 1,000 buildings and evacuating thousands of buildings.

More than 20,000 people in South Lake Tahoe have been displaced as the fire pushed up the Lake Tahoe basin.

According to CALFIREThe wildfire was completely contained on October 21, more than two months after it began.
