In July, Newsom called on people to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 15% in order to deal with a severe drought that brought some of the state’s reservoirs to dangerously low levels.
However, three weeks after Newsom’s announcement, residents have reduced their water consumption by only 1.8%, according to new data released Tuesday and reported by The Sacramento Bee.
“We’ll have to do more when it comes to conservation,” said Hoakin Eskibel, chairman of the board.
Still, Esquivel hoped that the number of protections in the state would improve. Newsom declared a drought emergency in the Russian River basin along the state’s north coast in April. According to local data, people have reduced water consumption by 17% compared to July compared to 2020.
“We can see that it will take some time for nature maintenance to come up,” Esquivel said, adding that the 17% figure “shows a community reaction” to appeal for nature maintenance.
“It’s a promising start in reducing water usage,” said Dave Egerton, executive secretary of the California Water Organizations Association. Is strengthening. “
The numbers released on Tuesday are only about three weeks worth of data. In addition, Californians use about 15% less water per capita than in 2014.
But this drought is putting more strain on water resources than ever before. Some of the state’s largest reservoirs are already at record lows. The water level on Lake Oroville is so low that authorities had to close the hydroelectric power plant for the first time.
Still, Newsom refused to impose mandatory water restriction. Former Governor Jerry Brown, Newsom’s predecessor, imposed a mandatory 25% water restriction during the last drought. The Newsom administration has suggested that water restriction may occur if the drought continues.
Karla Nemeth, director of the Department of Water Resources, said authorities are planning “worst scenarios for water availability” for the state’s three largest reservoirs.
