Greenville County, South Carolina (WSPA) — Courage of the camp I’m back face-to-face for the first time this week since the COVID-19 pandemic. The one-week camp is available to children being treated at the BI-LO Charity Children’s Cancer Center through Prisma Health Children’s Hospital. All campers are free.

“Our camper has been or has been diagnosed with a variety of oncology or hematology,” explained Erika Turner, director of camp courage.

Motorhomes spend a week on a variety of activities such as fishing, canoeing, and mountaineering on rope trails. They learn about teamwork and how to deal with crises. A medical team is waiting to ensure the safety of all campers.

“It was great,” said camper David Spracher.

“It was a really, really fun experience that I knew that nurses and doctors were watching me so I didn’t have to watch myself too much,” added camp counselor Colleen Belu.

Belue spent three years as a camper. Currently she is a counselor.

“I really enjoyed meeting the other kids here,” Beru said.

Belu said the camp made her feel like she wasn’t alone.

“Sometimes it’s awkward to talk about what you experience in the hospital,” Beru explained. “When you come to see children who are experiencing the same thing, it’s a really cohesive experience.”

“It is invaluable that they can come to the camp in the safest way possible and interact with peers who have similar medical experiences,” Turner added.
