Doctors have shown that it is possible to safely deliver drugs directly to the human brain in the world’s first cancer treatment that involves breaking the “blood-brain barrier.”

In this method, blood vessels in specific areas of the brain are temporarily made porous, allowing the drug to drain from the bloodstream and reach the tumor cells.

Four women with breast cancer that had spread to the brain used this method to shrink the tumor with a drug called Herceptin.
