Currently, St. Pete police say there were 28 murders this year, and this year is not over yet. In this year’s jump, police and community leaders are seeking peace.
“With the exception of murder, our overall violent crime statistics are declining,” said Jolanda Fernandez, a spokesperson for the St. Petersburg Police Department.
They are statistics that show real people who have left their injured loved ones behind.
“In the past year, I’ve lost three cousins in gun violence under the age of 25,” said community advocate Corey Gives Jr.
Givens Jr. says it was the trauma of the community that led to the level of desensitization.
“We are very accustomed to going to these marches. We are so accustomed to going to these gun violence monuments that it has become a part of our daily lives.” He said.
So what can you do? Now, Givens Jr. says that change begins with the support of the community.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that our children go to after-school activities. This is productive to keep time and hands busy. Careers and careers, as people commit crimes. Make sure you have a vocational training program, and violence to achieve your goals. “
Republican mayor candidate Robert Blackmon said he would strengthen police in the short term to curb violence and focus on the next generation in the long run.
“First and foremost, we need to give young people educational opportunities,” he said.
It’s a feeling he doubled during the mayor’s debate on Tuesday night.
“That’s why I promoted more work programs, such as after-school and summer work for young people working in the park. This is a mentorship program for teens to teach junior high and junior high school students in elementary school. You can partner with people, “he says. Said.
And in a recent election promise, Democrat Ken Welch, an opponent of Blackmon, promised to make St. Petersburg “safer for all.” On Tuesday night, he said he would push the promise and at the same time start by focusing on the youth.
“I want to upgrade our community center to a community empowerment and innovation center and have a really continuous dialogue with our youth as I’ve been doing for years,” he said.
To continue this conversation, Givens Jr. will hold a community forum on Tuesday, October 26th, at 5:30 pm to discuss the trauma left by the violence. The event will take place at the Bethel Community Baptist Church in St. Petersburg.
