Barnstable, Massachusetts. (WHDH)-Cape Cod teachers were taken on vacation after “physically intervening” in an incident involving students Thursday morning, officials said.

According to principal Meg Mayo Brown, the incident took place in a Barnstable High School classroom around 8:15 am.

“A teacher at Barnstable High School improperly physically intervened in a problem between two students,” Mayo Brown said in a statement. “Teachers have been on leave due to behavior that goes against the values and expectations of Barnstable Public School.”

A shocking video of the quarrel is shared on social media, showing teachers throwing students into the filing cabinet first. The student can be heard screaming in pain.

“The teacher caught up with him, he grabbed him maliciously, pulled him, and he flew into the filing cabinet,” said Caleb Jones, who witnessed the incident directly.

Jones said two of his friends had an affair with the ruler during an art class.

“They were fooling around until one hit the other hard and then it hit something else,” he said.

He said the fight escalated dramatically when the teacher intervened.

“The teacher really chased and tried to stop the situation, but that didn’t happen,” Jones explained.

Jones said his friend was left on the floor in pain.

“He was just sitting there. He was just sitting there,” he said. “He got up and was really hurt. He was crying at his desk for 10 minutes until we decided to take him out.”

It was a student friend who eventually took him to the nurse.

“The teacher was just walking around as if he was okay,” Jones said.

Mayo-Brown said the case was under investigation and appropriate action would be taken based on the school district’s findings.

“We want the BHS community to know that we take this issue very seriously and that the health and safety of our students remains our number one priority,” Mayo said. Brown said.

Barnstable police are supporting the investigation.

“I think this was terrible. It wasn’t right at all,” Jones said. “I don’t want to see my teacher do that to my friends.”

The teacher’s name has not been announced.
