(KMOV.com) — The Cardinals will get a boost to the series with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field this weekend as the team announced Thursday that it activated shortstop Paul DeJong from the injured list.
Daejeon missed action in the last few weeks after suffering a rib fracture when hit on the pitch on May 11. After a series of rehab games with Memphis last week, Dejon is a future rival series.
His batting average had dropped to .177 before he hit the IL, but De Jong was still finding a way to make a positive impact on the team. In addition to providing shortstop and quality defense, Dejon was one of the club’s leaders with seven home runs at the time of the injury.
In the absence of Dejon, the Cardinal discovered Edmundo Sosa as a potential sustaining contributor. He hadn’t made much noise on his rare Major League Baseball occasions before, but Sosa showed confidence and ability as a major Cardinals shortstop last month. Sosa, a talented infielder with multiple infielders, believes Dejon will return to good health and shift to a practical role.
To make room for Dejon on the active roster, Cardinals chose to return John Nogowski to Memphis. The Cardinals spend a holiday on Thursday before riding the Cubs on the weekends in Chicago.
