NS. Louis (KMOV.com) – Cardinals has appointed bench coach Oliver Marmol as the new manager of the team.
This news was first reported by Katie Wu and Ken Rosenthal of Athletic Sunday Nights. Mármol, 35, was nominated as a bench coach in 2019 and was considered by many to be a strong candidate for the job.
Marmol is the 51st manager of the team. He spent three years as a Cardinals bench coach before Cardinals announced him as a manager. He was drafted as a player by the Cardinals in 2007 and was managed by the Cardinals farm system from 2012 to 2016.
The announcement was not surprising, as Marmol was considered a leading candidate for the position after the organization fired Mike Shield.
“I didn’t expect to introduce a new manager in the 2022 season, like many of you,” Mozeliak said at a Zoom press conference. “But I’m here.”
Marmol emphasized how important the Cardinals organization is to him.
“It’s one thing to manage,” Mármol said at a news conference. “Managing one of the most historic organizations in all of sports, not just baseball, is another thing.”
The 35-year-old Marmor has been Cardinals’ youngest skipper since Marty Marion began managing the team at the age of 34 in 1951.
