Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — “I’m going there,” Brian Flag said when he handed a bag of food to one of the many people he sees every day.
Brian collaborates with Casa Maria A soup kitchen that has helped people in our community for years. Brian knows everyone who stops by by name.
“I’m the guy you know who’ll be here forever,” Brian said. He explained that he had worked there since he moved to Tucson in 1983.
He likes to build relationships with the community.
“You can find out what needs to change and hopefully you can jump in and become an agent of change,” Brian said.
That’s why we take Brian to the front door of Casa Maria almost every day. People also expect Brian to be there.
“If someone doesn’t show up within seconds, you can’t leave this door,” Brian said as more people lined up to get food.
The kitchen serves hundreds of people and families every day. Closed days are Thanksgiving and Christmas only.
Brian is there every day, but he can’t do everything himself. Casa Maria helps community members volunteer to pack food in bags and make soup daily. They also rely on food and money donations to keep doors open and stockpile and distribute food.
