Championship Team News Update – July 2021

Sheffield United will be looking to bounce back and make an immediate return to the Premier League. The Blades had a horrific 20/21 campaign, where they managed just 23 points, losing 29 of 38 league games and parted company with manager Chris Wilder. Former Chelsea man, Slavisa Jokanovic, has been chosen as the man to guide them back to the best league in Europe, and he has been given the green light to bring in his own players.

One name being heavily linked is Brighton defender Matt Clarke. The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Derby County, and it’s not considered part of Graham Potter’s plans at the AMEX Stadium. Since parting ways with fan favourite, Phil Jagielka, Jokanovic will need some experience at centre back, and it appears that Clarke has caught the attention of the Bramall Lane recruitment team.

The lure of guaranteed first team action will be enough to sway Clarke, and with Sheffield United looking likely to be amongst the favourites to get promotion, Clarke could be looking at the prospect of being a Premier League player in a year’s time.

Luke Freeman Dilemma

Luke Freeman is looking like he will be given another chance at the Yorkshire based club. The midfielder spent the last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, having been deemed not ready for Premier League football. With the departure of John Lundstram to Scottish-giants, Glasgow Rangers, Sheffield United will need some quality in the midfield, and reports suggest that Jokanovic has confidence in the 29-year-old. Luke Freeman has a lot of experience at Championship level, having previously played for Brentford and Queens Park Rangers as well as Nottingham Forest. The midfielder has more than 230 Championship appearances to his name, and that is the kind of experience that Slavisa Jokanovic will be looking for as he looks to take Sheffield United forward.

West Bromwich Albion (WBA)

West Brom is looking like they will struggle to hold on to a few of their stars. Kyle Bartley is the name being linked to a few Premier League clubs after it has emerged that he may want to leave the club following interest from Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.

Fan’s are said to be unhappy at the thought of losing him, but the idea seems to have been made worse, considering he may leave for as little as 3 million. The player is entering the final year of his contract and does not look likely to sign a new one amidst the reported interest. West Brom has struggled to attract big names in the past, so to be able to replace a player of Bartley’s standard will be very difficult for the West Midlands club.

Valerien Ismael has told fans that Grady Diangana and Karlan Grant will be a big part of his team, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. The French manager has told both players that they will have a chance to prove their worth, having arrived for big money last season.
