Simone Biles’ decision not to compete in the Tokyo Olympics due to mental health issues initially shocked fellow world champion gymnast Chellsie Memmel. But she isn’t surprised at why.
“It’s like your mind and your body aren’t working in agreement with each other,” says Memel. “I know you want to get up and move. You can feel it and you can generally still see it in your brain, but then get up and you just do it. can not.”
Memmel states that this never happened during competition, but did occur during training. She says the way to fight it doesn’t happen in competitions like the Olympics. Rather, you need to practice in a safe place.
“Sometimes you have to go back to the basics and relearn your twisting skills,” says Memmel. She adds that twists and gymnastics routine mistakes can cause serious injuries and are necessary.
