Cherokee County, SC (WSPA) – The Cherokee County School District is considering adopting a revised school calendar for the 2023-2024 school year.

“Some districts in South Carolina have already moved to a revised calendar,” said Meredith Rose, executive director of the district’s curriculum. “We are currently investigating whether it will be in the best interests of our students. The modified calendar has several benefits — less burnout for teachers and students. Instead of waiting until the end of the school year, we provide students with the opportunity to improve or enrich in real time throughout the school year. “

According to Rose, if hired, the school year begins in the last week of July and ends in the beginning of June. There is also a break every 9 weeks.

The district surveyed families and staff about this month’s calendar. According to the district, 54% of responding teachers and staff supported the calendar, and 60% of the responding community members did not support the calendar.

Some parents told 7NEWS that they were worried that the new calendar could confuse their childcare and summer vacation plans.

“I feel it can be a problem for older kids who have been in school for so long and want to get a summer job or go out and have fun,” Angell Blackwell said. I am saying. “But the school system is preventing it.”

Mr Rose said the district is aware of these concerns.

“There are still opportunities for 6-7 weeks of summer vacation. [with a modified calendar]”Rose said. “Day care is a problem. We are discussing with partners such as the Boys and Girls Club to minimize the impact on parents.”

The school board has not yet voted on the calendar. The district will conduct another survey in the fall to provide more information to the family.
