Las Vegas (KLAS) – Dozens of union workers in Child Haven, a Clark County facility serving abused and abandoned children, are on strike Wednesday morning.
Staff say the working conditions of the Family Services Department are dangerous. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) claims that staff are untrained or unqualified to provide the necessary treatment for children with severe mental illness or autism.
The union claims that its members were treated violently by children at work. In some cases, workers were beaten, bitten and kicked.
Clark County, which operates the facility, said COVID-19 is working to suspend and catch up with them for almost a year.
The union has shown that DFS needs to hire at least 106 employees to bring working conditions back to safe levels, according to an independent study.
According to the document, the county has hired 29 new DFS employees in the last 30 days.
“We also share union members’ concerns about children with serious mental health problems in Child Haven. Mental health services for children continue throughout the country and in southern Nevada. Is missing … “
To address this, the county is working to hire mental health professionals and develop programs.
