(((WTEN) – The Internal Revenue Service warns taxpayers about what fraudsters are using Child tax creditRelated scams for stealing money and information. They said providing communication to help sign up for programs and speed up payments is likely to be a scam.

Fraudsters may attempt to contact taxpayers by phone, email, text message, or social media. The IRS said it would not contact people via email, text messages, or social media platforms.

“This tax credit is to immediately fund the family’s hands, not the scammers who routinely target relief programs as a way to enrich themselves,” said a special agent in charge of the Boston Field Office. Deputy Investigator Ramsey E. Cobington said. “By following a few basic steps, families in need of these funds can be protected from many persistent scams.”

The IRS said it would not leave pre-recorded, urgent or threatening messages. He also states that both offensive calls warning of proceedings and arrests are fraudulent and will never require gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency payments.

They also said they would not call taxpayers or ask for confirmation of personal or financial information so that they could be paid a child tax deduction.
