Children could start being vaccinated by early November – Kansas City, Missouri

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Vaccine Advisory Board will meet on Tuesday to review the efficacy of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine aged 5-11 years.

“I think the public needs to be aware that this is just some of the first steps that providers need to take before they can actually vaccinate this population,” the United States said. Mitch Rothholtz of the American Pharmacists Association said.

After the meeting on Tuesday, Rothholz said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccine Commission will meet on November 2nd and 3rd, with its director making final recommendations.

“Once the FDA begins the process and grants EUA approval, the flow of supplies to the jurisdiction begins, but the provider is not available until the CDC issues a final recommendation,” Rothholz said.

If all goes well, Rothholtz said children aged 5 to 11 could be vaccinated on the first weekend of November.

“The access point is there. The limit, again, is the supply of a new vaccine. Once you get it, it was phased in a year ago and actually caused an unexpected supply limit. But it takes a couple of weeks to reach the whole system, “Rosholtz said.

Vaccines are available through pediatrician offices, local pharmacies, and state and local governments.

There are some important differences between vaccines received by adults and vaccines received by younger children.

“Whether it’s the original vaccine, the current booster dose, or the first dose for a child, the amount we give is really tailored to what people’s bodies need. So they got a great lively response, and they’re ready when they see the virus, said Dr. Aaron Milstone, an infectious disease specialist at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

According to Milstone, the dose to children is about one-third that of adults. This is because the child’s immune system tends to react more aggressively than adults, so it doesn’t need much.

“I keep seeing people getting their kids home from school and day care and spreading them to their families and parents. Therefore, COVID isn’t gone. We’re giving kids and adults to get out of this pandemic. Continues to rely on vaccination, “Milstone said.

Milstone said people need to contact a pediatrician in advance and ask questions about the vaccine so that it is ready when it becomes available.
