The Euro 2020 football match was interrupted Saturday night after Danish football player Christian Eriksen fell on the pitch and medical staff fought to revive him in front of shocked players and fans.
Play was stopped as Eriksen fell to the ground and began to cramp towards the end of the first half of the Danish-Finnish match in Copenhagen on Saturday.
Some players and British referee Anthony Taylor immediately sought help. I could see the medical staff rushing to the pitch and doing CPR for a few minutes.
Eriksen’s Danish teammates have created a shield to protect their privacy from the thousands of supporters on the stand. The television coverage of the match ended shortly thereafter.
The Danish Football Association later said Eriksen was “awakening” in a hospital where his condition was “stable.”
Uefa said the match will resume after consulting with the team. The players returned to the pitch as fans of both teams chanted Eriksen’s name.
Eriksen, 29, is a star player who won the Italian Serie A Soccer League at Inter Milan this season. Known as a creative midfielder, he has represented the country 108 times and has played in some of Europe’s leading clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur in England and Ajax in the Netherlands.
The Denmark-Finland match is the third match of Euro 2020, a one-month tournament that kicks off Friday, with 24 national teams playing in 11 European cities.
The Covid-19 pandemic adopted strict health and hygiene protocols to prevent outbreaks between teams, delaying competition by a year.
