Honolulu (KHON2) — Construction of Bridge 605 near Waialua Beach Road is underway.

The Honolulu City and County Department of Transportation Services (DTS) and the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) have announced that construction began last week and will continue seven days a week, regardless of holidays.

The city adds that divers have already found additional underground damage to the support structure since the inspection was conducted in early March.

Vegetation was removed on the banks of the stream to accommodate the stairs to access under the bridge. To stabilize the slope, the stairs will be removed and grass will be planted on the banks of the stream after the construction is completed.

Other responsibilities associated with the site include construction site security, biological monitoring, maintenance of best management practices, and existing traffic control measures.

During construction, divers may still be underwater and community members are being asked to keep water out of the bridge and its surrounding areas.

Authorities add that access to the bridge is strictly prohibited and that moving within a security fence is considered an intrusion into an active construction site.
