Wichita, Patrol (KSNW) – Members of the Wichita City Council will vote on Tuesday to move Patrol East to Lincoln and Pine Crest. WPD is about to relocate its eastern substation.
WPD’s current substation was built in the 1980s. “The current Patrol East substation was built in the late 1980s and has since been able to accommodate about 30-40 police officers,” said Lieutenant Krys Henderson. “Since then, our staff has grown to nearly 100 people, so there is no space available for equipment, storage, or anything of that nature in this current building.”
Today, the building has tripled the number of intended officers and the department has surpassed accommodation. “Therefore, the new one we are building is about 24,000 square feet, which is clearly significantly larger than what is here today,” said Lieutenant Henderson.
The new structure offers more than just a police station. “The station will also be used for patrol officers, community police officers, rest areas, public recreation for citizens with free access to the facility, and containment and evidence areas,” added Lieutenant Henderson. ..
The land of the proposed substation is owned by Wichita Public School. The city of Wichita will have to pay nearly $ 218,000 for the land if approved.
“From the 1980s to the 1990s, law enforcement changed a lot. The way we deal with crime is clearly different,” said Lieutenant Henderson. “It has also changed, so the strategic location of the new Patrol East substation will give us an edge in that regard.”
