Bernarillo County says some of these people are eligible for emergency housing, but there is no place to put them. City officials say people are coming to Albuquerque from a small town because they don’t have services where they are.
They want to demand money from Congress to solve the city’s homeless housing shortage. The city is now waiting for permission to turn the old Loverace Hospital into the long-awaited gateway center.
The night shelter can accommodate up to 100 individuals and 25 families when in operation.
