Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – Los Altspark is undergoing a major makeover.

“There are millions of other park renovation projects underway, but nothing is as big as Los Altos,” said Dave Simon, director of CABQ Parks and Recreation.

The city’s master plan is divided into two phases. Phase 1 involves redoing the park’s four softball fields and adding a fifth. It also includes a new community building with toilets, meeting rooms and a kiosk. The addition of the second phase will include a new BMX truck and an improved dog park.

“It’s important for us to think big, and when we make such a refurbishment, make sure it lasts for a generation,” Simon said.

City council member Diane Gibson estimates that the total investment in the park will be about $ 30 million. This includes $ 7 million for the recently refurbished pool, about $ 13 million for Phase 1 and Phase 2 costs.

She recently introduced a resolution urging the city to commit to funding the rest of the project. The resolution also states that alcohol should not be sold in shops.

“It’s legal to drink alcohol in the park, so you can legally take a bottle of wine over there and drink a bottle of wine. And I’m trying to change that. No, “she said. “What I’m trying to say is that you shouldn’t sell it. Especially the city shouldn’t sell it … it’s not something, it’s not the risk the city wants to take.”

She also urges two funded guards in the park to put a place in the community building to store and charge their electric carts.

“We want security to be that agile and quick to respond to problems,” said Gibson. She said security is the key to a successful new beginning in problematic parks near I-40 and Eubank.

For a revitalization in this park to happen, and that’s what we really want. We really want to let you know and restore the former glory of Los Altos Park. And we do that, “she said. “What we absolutely need is to ensure that this is a safe place for everyone who uses the park.”

Gibson is also seeking a feasibility study of the sidewalks around the Los Altos Golf Course. The city hopes to get the softball field up and running sometime next year. There is no schedule yet for when the entire refurbishment will be completed.
