On Friday, Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera, city staff, and veteran organizations across Tampa Bay will gather outside Old City Hall for a flag-hoisting ceremony in honor of National Purple Heart Day.

The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded, killed, or died after being wounded in an enemy attack. National Purple Heart Day is Sunday, August 7th. This National Day honors the men and women who served in the military and earned the Purple Heart for their courage and sacrifice.

The ceremony will take place at 10:00 am on Friday, August 5, at Tampa City Hall at 315 E. Kennedy Blvd., corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Franklin Streets.

The Old Town Hall, along with downtown’s parklands and bridges, glows purple at sunset from August 5-7 in honor of the Purple Heart winners.
