City of Tucson keeps number of pools closed during search for lifeguards – Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — Tomás Rojas loves summer work.

“I like lifeguards because I like being outside, but I also love all the people I work with,” Lohas said.

Rojas is one of about 100 lifeguards working in Tucson this summer, but not enough.

“You don’t have to be 100 people all day. There are people who go to summer school and other jobs. There are hours of staff here, hours there,” said Billy, Tusson City Park and Recreation Aquatics Manager. Sash says.

The city usually opens 20 pools during the summer. Only 12 stores opened this year.

“This is mainly due to a shortage of staff. It took almost two years to lose staff,” says Sassi.

When all city pools were closed in March 2020, some guards were forced to look for jobs elsewhere. Sassi currently has many positions left to fill.

“It’s a really good experience. It gives you many life skills like working with the public, swimming, CPR and first aid. There are many important skills that not everyone has.” Sash said.

The more guards the city can hire, the more pools could open.

“It’s really fun and you won’t regret meeting someone,” Lohas said.
