Madera, CA (KFSN)-Madera Riverview Drive residents fill the city council meeting room Wednesday night and clean the riverbed behind the house to prevent such another catastrophic fire. He demanded that he take immediate action to do so.

The area is rampant with dry brushes, which are often visited by homeless people. Mayor Arnold Rodriguez said removing vegetation from the riverbed requires approval from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The city claims to have worked hard for many years.

Rodriguez was approved minutes before Wednesday’s council meeting after learning about a brush fire where Fish and Wildlife destroyed two homes on Tuesday and damaged several other assets. He said he received the news.

“We have informed them that we will use heavy equipment to start emergency cleaning work at the bottom of the river, and we will start it as soon as we have the equipment,” he said.

Residents of the Riverview Drive say the cleanup should have been done many years ago. Mike Barras showed us how close the fire was to burning his house. He blames the city leaders.

Neighbors say they are alive for fear of what will happen next.

“When I come from a farm labor camp to where I live, I’m proud of what we have, and it just hurts,” says Mary Sandval. “It hurts that we have to be scared to live where we live.”

But so far, city officials have stated that bureaucratic formalism and state orders prevented them from taking action, especially during a pandemic.

“For two years, we were ordered not to touch, disturb, or move the homeless,” says Madera Police Chief Dino Lawson.

Some families living along the riverbed are left to save and rebuild what they can do.

City officials say that immediate cleaning of the riverbed will be paid with money from the general fund. However, the city has been granted a $ 820,000 grant for future cleanup of the riverbed.
