Close call when pipe flies through Florida man’s windshield – Tampa, Florida

Lucie, Port St. FloridaWPTV)-A man on the Treasure Coast says his mind is still racing after calling for a Florida turnpike up close earlier this week.

“The roof saved us, and it was literally poking like this.” Mike Zelner said. “How close were we to death?”

Zelner was at his home in Port St. Lucie on Tuesday, heading north near Miami, driving behind a truck pulling a cement mixer.

“Suddenly, the piece fell off the mixer and bounced back in front of me,” Zelner said. “And suddenly it crushed my windshield.”

“The roof saved us,” says Mike Zelner, who has a steel pipe that has fallen from a cement mixer and pressed against the windshield of a car.

A sturdy steel pipe was launched like a missile and shot directly into his windshield in less than a second to react.

“You’re talking about a piece of pipe that weighs 5 to 7 pounds at 70 mph and you’re hitting your head or chest. You didn’t mean to survive it,” Zelner said.

Her heart began to throb when Zelner sent a photo of the pipe to his wife, Linel.

“If he turns left or right by an inch, it could have gone right inside him,” Lynelle Zelnar said. “I just lost my mother and saw that I thought,’Oh, my God, thank the living God.'”

Zelner said he didn’t have enough time to bend or get in the way. You may be surprised to find out how often crashes occur due to dangerous debris.

In a four-year period, more than 200,000 accidents involved road debris in the United States, resulting in 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths, according to the latest research conducted by the AAA Road Safety Foundation.

Zelner knows he’s lucky, but to prevent this from happening, he asks the driver to secure his luggage.

“It was scary. I had been in the army and this was probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Zelner said.
