Clovis Unified reviewing dress code after parents, students call for change – Fresno, California

Fresno, California 2021-09-24 20:27:06 –

Clovis, CA (KFSN)-Parents and students are asking Clovis Unified to change their dress code, and the district says it’s controversial.

Hot ticket items include shorts length, tank top strap width, and how to wear leggings. These are all common women’s clothing choices, and many girls say they feel they have been called.

The district says they are open to making changes, but they want to make sure that the purpose of the dress code is still achieved.
“What we want is a dress code that makes us feel safer and less targeted,” says student Phoebe Schmitz.

Clovis Unified students are asking for changes.

“The width of the tank top must be 2 inches, which is impractical,” Schmitz added. “It’s really hard to find.”

Many call the dress code unrealistic and target women, and even whiteout in August to protest current policies.

“It’s very difficult and increasingly expensive to go to the store and look for unbroken or frayed jeans,” said student Anissa Molina.

The district says they have decided to return the dress code for review a few months ago as they are subject to change.

“Talk to our community to make sure that the purpose of the dress code is achieved both in the code itself and in its enforcement,” said Kelly Avants, Clovis Unified Spokesperson.
They want to hear from their parents before they make a big difference.

Kathleen Ryan, the unifying parent of Clovis, feels that there are some issues with the policy.

“What I want to see is to make the policy more gender-neutral,” Ryan said. “Why do women control the amount of legs they can show to boys without talking? It’s the same as shoulders. They both have shoulders, right? Why are we only watching girls’ shoulders? mosquito?”

Changes to the policy need to be scrutinized by the board of directors.

“We need a dress code that everyone can access, and we need a dress code that meets all the standards of the law,” Avants added. “That is, it’s gender-neutral and there’s no distinction between boys and girls.”

Clovis Unified is currently seeking feedback from his family. They will share their recommendations in November and implement the changes in January 2022. If you are a parent interested in sharing your thoughts, you can. online..
