Mike Tamez of the Criminal Interdiction Unit at Nueces County District Attorney hosted a fundraising campaign for the veteran organization BurnPits360.
Corpus Christie, Texas — Members of several coastal bend law enforcement agencies gathered in Robstown on Monday morning for a class hosted by members of the Criminal Prohibition Unit of the Nuesses County District Attorney, just for this class. Not a veteran.
Mike Tamez is not only a member of the county’s blocking unit, but also owns his own blocking training company. Tamez has partnered with veteran organization Burn Pits 360 to educate executives and raise funds for veterans at the same time.
“Both jobs are so similar to military jobs and our police jobs that I decided to marry them in a fundraising campaign,” Tamez said.
“The only way we can make changes is to change the criteria for training individual officers away from these subjective training scars.”
Money from registrations and donations goes to veteran organizations based in Coastal Bend.
“100% of the proceeds from this class go directly to their organization to continue the fight for veterans at the national level,” said Tamez.
The organization advocates on behalf of veterans affected by military exposure to toxic substances, especially burns.
“We are here to empower, equip, educate and provide all the resources and scholarships they need through education and advocacy,” co-founder and executive director. Rosie Torres said.
Rosie Torres says her husband, Leroy Torres, founded the organization after suffering from chronic health-related problems due to his own exposure during service.
“We know if we are experiencing this horrifying journey in which the denial of VA’s benefits is not only dismissed from his civilian work, but also medically overcome from his military standpoint. I decided that there were many more of all these things that were there, “Torres said.
