Coastal Bend Pride Center responds to Texas anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that targets transgender youth – Riverside, California

House Bill 1399 prohibits healthcare providers from performing sex reassignment surgery or providing hormone replacement therapy to people under the age of 18.

Corpus Christi, Texas — The Texas Senate and House of Representatives have submitted more than 20 bills targeting the LGBTQ + community, and more specifically young people. The local pride center said it felt like a setback after overcoming challenges over the years.

“I don’t think I’ve ever imagined a world where people start robbing people of healthcare,” said Burton Bailey, director of the Coastal Bend Pride Center.

Several bills targeting the LGBTQ + community are gaining momentum as they pass the state legislature.

House Bill 1399 prohibits healthcare providers from performing sex reassignment surgery or providing hormone replacement therapy to people under the age of 18.

“We need to do everything in our community to encourage young people to live in those who can be perfect and try to understand it at a young age. Therefore, those attacks are just I’ll cover it, “said Bailey.

Bailey said the pride center still has people of all ages afraid of being unacceptable, and recent bills are useless.

“I really want none of them to happen,” Bailey said.

Bailey says the HIV criminalization bill and the transgender youth ban on sports discriminate against the community.

“I’ve seen elementary school students who are very exposed to their self-esteem when they recognize it as an LGBTQ,” Bailey said.

Professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe commented on the transgender opposition bills being discussed, saying “these bills are attacks on humanity and property of transgender people.”

She went on to say that transgender youth should live their dreams and be recognized who they are.

Our LGBTQ population has been discriminated against for many years. And yes, yes, that’s what happened before, “said Bailey.

There are over 240 anti-LGBTQ + bills under consideration in state law across the country.
