Broken Arrow, Oklahoma — Not Your Average Joe, a coffee shop that employs people with disabilities, has opened in Broken Arrow.
That’s exactly what it sounds like … it’s not your average coffee shop because they have a master coffee roaster and they call it an accepting employee.
This coffee shop is a non-profit organization that operates like a business, but it goes beyond coffee.
They have a mission to hire people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Kate Coffey is one of those employees and she is excited to work here.
“They are really, really friendly, really, really supportive, and it’s great to have friendly colleagues and such enthusiastic people,” Coffey said.
She says she works differently than most people, but here they accept it.
“They have some idea of what to expect from me, so I can make more progress,” Coffey said.
Progress is that they want their employees to see when they feel they are included.
In addition, they can help employees grow and strengthen the skills they have learned and succeed in life.
“We teach them POS systems, so we teach them how to learn how to use technology. We teach them how to enhance the math skills they learned at school,” said Tulsa Area Manager, Not Your Average Joe. Said Maggie Bond.
Now that they are the fifth largest place in the state, they are having an even greater impact on the community.
“Currently, we have more than 40 adults in need of special needs, which is great,” said Tim Habel, not the average Joe’s executive director.
You can clearly see the joy of working here for these employees.
“You’re not going to get an angry barista. Mr. Harbel said,” I’m happy with the job and will welcome anyone who wants to get a job. So they’re full of that joy. Just tell you with coffee. “
Coffey couldn’t agree anymore.
“It will be a great opportunity to come here and taste their drinks. I hear that Sherpatia is very, very good,” Coffey said.
Inside Emerson Orthodontics, Not Your Average Joe has a drink that suits all tastes, even if you don’t have coffee.
Eventually, we plan to expand to offer pastries and ice cream.
Open Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.
