Powell was the first African-American to chair the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later Secretary of State, and was unanimously confirmed in 2001.

He continued his compelling claim to US military action against Iraq in 2003 in front of the United Nations, claiming that Saddam Hussein was producing weapons of mass destruction. A war broke out, Saddam was defeated and killed, and Iraq was destabilized, but no such weapon was found and his reputation suffered a tragic retreat.

Powell consistently defended his support for the Iraq War. He quoted false information claiming that Hussein was secretly hiding weapons of mass destruction. He told the United Nations that Iraq does not represent a “net of lies.”

A lifelong Republican, Powell was of little use to former President Donald Trump, who supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. He left the Republican Party after the assault on the US Capitol on January 6.

Former President George W. Bush said he and former First Lady Laura Bush were “deeply saddened” by Powell’s death.

“He was a great civil servant,” and “was widely respected at home and abroad,” Bush said. “And most importantly, Colin was a family member and friend. Laura and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Alma and her children for remembering the life of a great man.”
