Suspect arrested in West Virginia police shooting

A state trooper was shot dead in southern West Virginia on Friday, and a suspect was later arrested, officials said.

The Mingo County School District announced on Facebook that a high school graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday night has been postponed for safety reasons as a search for a suspect is conducted. The school district said residents in the Beech Creek area were instructed to shelter in place during the search.

The school district later announced that the graduation ceremony was moved to Saturday “out of respect” for the fallen police officer.

No other injuries were reported, and further details about the shooting were not immediately released. The judge ordered all flags across the state to be flown at half mast in Maynard’s honor.
