Colorado Springs — May’s “Click It or Ticket” period quoted 907 drivers, resulting in high fines, but more importantly, always wearing seat belts. Don’t forget.
From May 16th to June 5th, CDOT, Colorado Police, and 64 law enforcement agencies have partnered for the largest ClickIt or Ticket enforcement period of the year. A total of 907 drivers were cited during the state-wide enforcement, of which 24 drivers improperly detained children under the age of 15 in cars.
Colorado Springs issued the most citations, with 141 drivers cited, followed by Thornton Police Station with 95, Bloomfield Police with 77, and Castle Rock Police with 76.
Currently, only 86% of Coloradans choose to grab the steering wheel, and the state is below the national average seatbelt usage of 90%.
Colorado Seatbelt Act
- Adults — Colorado has a secondary enforcement law for adult drivers and passengers in passenger seats. If the driver stops due to another traffic violation, the ticket may be issued if the driver violates the seatbelt law.
- Teens — All drivers and their passengers under the age of 18 are required to wear seat belts, regardless of age. This is a major enforcement and can pull teens just because there are passengers who are not wearing seat belts or are not wearing seat belts.
- Children — Colorado’s Child Passenger Safety Act is a major enforcement requirement. This means that if a police officer finds an undetained or improperly detained child under the age of 16 in the car, the driver can stop and issue a ticket.
Between 2016 and 2020, a car crash in Colorado killed 35 children under the age of 14. More than half of these were in improperly used or installed child seats, or none at all.
“We will strengthen seatbelt wear as an important deterrent for drivers who are not buckled,” said Matthew C. Puckard, Chief of Patrol, Colorado. “The same people who chose to gamble in their lives in the event of a crash provide all sorts of excuses because law enforcement officers have written their quotes. Wearing a seatbelt every time. Don’t forget. ”
