Colorado Springs – The US Air Force announced Thursday that Colorado Springs is a finalist in the process of appointing a permanent host for the US Space Command (USSPACECOM).
The final decision is scheduled for early 2021. There were about 40 communities that responded to the questionnaire. Earlier next week, the US Air Force will announce details of the next steps in the process.
“Colorado Springs is undoubtedly the United States, given our incredible quality of life, five military installations, an important existing talent base, and experience as a community that has long supported the U.S. military. An ideal place to act as a permanent residence for the Space Force. In addition to these assets, we already have the infrastructure to accommodate this operation, and much of US SPACECOM’s future leadership is here. Trained at the US Air Force Military School. The Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and EDC praise the tireless efforts to continue this bidding process and look forward to the January announcement, “said Mayor John Suthers.
On May 15, Peterson Air Force Base was informed that it would remain the interim headquarters of US SPACECOM for at least six years. US SPACECOM employs approximately 1,400 space professionals. Funding the new headquarters building adds $ 500 million to $ 1 billion in MILCON, a military construction investment, to the community.
“We are thrilled that Colorado Springs has made progress in the process,” said Reggie Ash, Chief Defense Development Officer at Chamber & EDC. “Our community is working on space, and this announcement contributes to our mission to maintain our position as a defense leader. Colorado Springs is the center of gravity of national security space. Also, US space. We have military assets, infrastructure, and a professional space force to support the wide range of operations of the military. “
Ash has led the Winning US SPACECOM campaign since its official launch in February 2020. Chamber & EDC, community, and state partners maintained consulting services with three institutions that advised strategies and implemented tactics. The agencies are Development Counselor International, Chamber & EDC’s current public relations agency, American Continental Group, and The Trailblazer Group, a DC-based public relations and political consultant.
