Colorado Springs, Colorado 2021-07-24 06:03:03 –
Three weeks ago, in the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC world, everything looked almost perfect.
The USL Championship team recorded five undefeated streak wins and was on an upward trajectory towards the top of the USL Championship Mountain Division rankings.
But in a blink of an eye, Switchback lost three of the last four games. The latest retreat to San Antonio FC 3-2 at Weidner Field in front of 4,875 people on Saturday as a national television viewer watching on ESPN2.
“We need to be better,” said Switchbacks coach Brendan Burke. “The first half was everywhere. Our back 4 was everywhere. We didn’t play. We didn’t take the ball out of the air early. (San Antonio) put pressure on us. Allowed.
“We were generally bad, and it starts with me.”
Burke was also dissatisfied with the secretariat.
“I didn’t play well in the first half, but the second half was handed over to the referee for the seventh time this season,” he said. “And it is generous to the referee.”
Even more frustrating for Burke and his crew was the fact that San Antonio couldn’t win the match for nearly two months, a span of seven matches. His final victory defeated Birmingham Legion FC 2-1 on May 22nd.
“We need to return to our identity,” said Switchbacks defender Matt Mahony. “We’re probably leaking too many goals. We have to do better than that, especially with those we’re moving forward.”
On Friday, Switchbacks will host Louisville City FC. Louisville City FC is the # 1 team in the Central Division, moving from # 1 to # 4 last week in the latest USL Championship Power Rankings.
“The match against Louisville shows what kind of team we are and what kind of character we have,” Mahony said. “Louisville is always at the top of the power rankings. It’s been five years since I joined the league.”
Mahony was dissatisfied with the team’s recent skids, but felt disappointed with his teammates because he couldn’t convert what could have been the goal of the game in the 79th minute. He had a clear shot on the net from about 6 yards, but launched it on the crossbar.
“As a defender, you don’t get many of those opportunities,” Mahony said. “I want to get it back.”
Switchbacks finished 1-0 7 minutes into the match with a goal from Nathan Fogaka.
Six minutes later, Hadji Barry scored with the league’s thirteenth goal when he played a loose ball well in San Antonio’s box. He celebrated the goal by improvising with forwards Michele Ngalina and Deshane Beckford.
San Antonio responded with two more goals (both penalty shootouts) before half-time, leading the second 45-minute stanza 3-1.
The switchback was pulled into the goal in the 73rd minute when Zach Zandi fired a shot over San Antonio goalkeeper Matt Cardon for the first score of the season. The goal was especially sweet for Zandy, who missed the previous six games of the team after suffering four fractures in his face when accidentally kicked by his teammates.
“It’s nice to be on the score sheet, but I’m sorry I couldn’t help the team anymore,” said Zandy, who played in the match in the 60th minute with a clear face guard for protection. Said. “That’s good for me. I’m happy. I’ve been out for a long time. I’m happy to be back and help the team.”
