Pueblo, Colorado — Something big is happening in southern Colorado. One of the state’s largest solar fields now powers the 150-year-old EVRAZ steelworks in Pueblo almost completely.
David Lawler, Chairman and President of bp America, said: “This will set up a steel mill for long-term success.”
Lightsource bp, a 50/50 joint venture with bp, recently reduced emissions and helped more than 1,000 people at EVRAZ’s Puebro Steelworks, the world’s first steel mill primarily powered by solar energy. Announced a solar project to do.
The project is primarily located on 1,800 acres of land on the grounds of EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel in Pueblo. It is the largest on-site solar facility in the United States dedicated to a single customer, with over 750,000 solar panels providing almost all of the plant’s annual electricity demand.
“Heavy industries around the world may rely on renewable energy to power their facilities,” said Kevin Smith, CEO of Lightsource bp in the Americas. “This is really important.”
Lightsource bp funds, owns and operates Bighorn Solar and sells the electricity generated by Xcel Energy under a 20-year electricity purchase agreement. As part of that arrangement, EVRAZ will receive clean, renewable electricity and price certainty from Xcel Energy until 2041.
According to Lightsource bp, this project will enable Xcel Energy to reduce CO2 emissions by 433,770 metric tons. This is equivalent to removing 92,100 fuel-burning vehicles from the road each year.
The Bighorn Solar project is currently generating electricity on the grid and will be fully online in November. The world of opportunity is waiting for you now.
“It’s not just steel mills,” Smith explained. “It will be an automobile manufacturing facility, it will be a mine … a chemical plant. You know, really totally.”
