Columbus, Ohio-Police shot dead a teenage girl in Columbus on Tuesday afternoon, just as the verdict was announced in the trial for the murder of George Floyd.

Police showed body camera footage on Tuesday night at a press conference that shot and killed a girl who allegedly tried to stab a black girl with a knife.

Immediately after she was shot and fell, a black-handled blade resembling a kitchen knife or steak knife appeared to lie on the sidewalk next to her.

State law allows police to use deadly forces to protect themselves and others, and investigators will determine if the shooting was such a case, interim police chief Michael Woods. Woods said at a press conference.

According to police, police responded to an attempt to stab the girl when she was shot dead at about 4:45 pm. They said the 911 callers reported that the women tried to stab them before they hung up.

Police said the girl was taken to a hospital where she was sentenced to death.

It is unknown if anyone else was injured.

“A young woman died tragically this afternoon,” tweeted Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther.

“Based on this footage, we know that police officers have taken action to protect another girl in our community,” he later said at a press conference.

The police, who answered the phone and police officers in the field department, could not immediately provide details to the Associated Press.

Crowds flocked to the scene of Legion Lane, which was partially closed by police on Tuesday night. Others gathered at the city’s police headquarters to protest a week after police sprayed peppers on a group of police trying to enter headquarters over the killing of a man with a gun in the hospital’s emergency room. It was.

Hundreds of protesters approached police officers across police barriers outside headquarters while city officials were showing body camera videos inside. Many chanted, “Tell her name!” Others indicated the age of the victim by yelling, “She was just a child.” A policeman with a bicycle pushed the protesters back and threatened to deploy pepper spray to the crowd.

Police said the girl’s name and age were withheld while her family was notified.

The shooting took place about 25 minutes before the judge read the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for murder and manslaughter in the killing of Floyd.

Kimberly Shepherd, 50, who has lived in the neighborhood for 17 years, said she knew the victim.

“The neighborhood has definitely experienced that change, but there is nothing like this,” Shepherd said of the shooting. “But this is the worst thing that has ever happened here, and unfortunately it’s in the hands of the police.”

Shepherd and his neighbor James Jones, 51, were celebrating Chauvin’s conviction. But things changed rapidly, she said.

“We were happy with the verdict, but you couldn’t even enjoy it,” Shepherd said. “I’ve received one call that he’s guilty, so the next call is happening in my neighborhood.”
