Rock Hill, South Carolina (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) – The Rock Hill community mourns the death of former Lieutenant Larry Vaughan of the Rock Hill Police Department. His murder.
Those who know him best say he has touched the lives of everyone he has come into contact with.
Dallas Brock and Susan Archie send thoughts and prayers to the former Lieutenant and the department in which he served for over 30 years. “I’m really sorry for his family. It’s terrible to happen,” Brock said. “Anyone who does it has to pay for the result.”
Authorities say it began as a physical quarrel with 27-year-old Evan Hawthorne in his apartment on Main Street.
Autopsy results are currently pending, and Hawthorne is behind a bar charged with murder.
According to records, Hawthorne was a former Chester County councilor and was dismissed in 2019 for drunk driving.
“Why? What was the purpose of the adjutant’s killing of the lieutenant?” Archie said.
Currently, the relationship between Vaughan and Hawthorne is being investigated.
The video shows a scene around 3:15 pm when several law enforcement agencies responded to the Anderson apartment building.
“We were sitting here watching everything that was happening. We could almost hear the cops talking about it as they passed by,” Brock said.

He has won numerous awards and has contributed to the community.

The York County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and has not revealed the cause of Vaughn’s death. Currently, they say that all of them are being investigated.
“I’m sorry it happened to one of them. You always hate seeing cops fall. It’s a sad, sad day,” Archie said.
