A community safety sector designed to curb gun violence using a three-way approach
Portland, Oregon (KOIN) — The City of Portland’s Community Safety Department was established in the spring after the city council passed the Ordinance on Gun Violence.
Rich Chatman, a spokesman for the division, said it was designed to curb gun violence using three approaches, including long-term investment in sustainable solutions.
“We could take some kind of multifaceted approach to a problem that everyone in our city recognizes as needing to be addressed quickly,” Chatman said. Told to. “We want a solution that prevents shooting and police intervention.”
The solution also includes intervention work, some of which is currently being carried out by community-based organizations employed by the city.
“These are people who are connected to communities affected by gun violence and, in some cases, can provide life coaching and several different interventions,” he said.
Police will play a role in the strategy, Chatman said, which means that the police team will focus solely on gun violence.
The PPB attempted to create a team of police officers in uniform to actively combat gun violence, the Intensive Intervention Team (FIT). The problem is that very few executives want to participate.
“In reality, it takes time to place all the parts,” says Chatman.
Shooting has increased dramatically since April, when the Portland City Council resolved to issue $ 6 million to prevent gun violence.
“I think it’s important for Portland residents to recognize that the problems they see in the city are not unrecognized by the people who work there,” he said. “Many of us are very passionate about the city and its safe place.”
