Dewey Westra, a longtime construction executive and founding member of Wisconsin’s affiliated builders and contractors, has died. He was 92 years old.

Westra founded Westra Construction with his father in the late 1940s. The company has grown into a large general contractor and was ranked 7th among Wisconsin general contractors in terms of total revenue until Westra retired in 1991. Westra Construction was closed in 2005. The Westra family founded another company, the Beaver Dam-based WDS Construction. , Still working.

Outside of his job at the company, Westra was a founding member of the Wisconsin branch of Associated Builders and Contractors. Westra was one of the five directors listed in the trade association’s charter when it was founded in Wisconsin in 1972. He served as ABC of Wisconsin President in 1980 and 1981. Westra also participated in ABC’s National Board of Directors from 1979 to 1982. ..

In 1984, Westra was the first ABC winner of the Wisconsin Wesmeilan Awards. This is an honor named after another founding member of an industry group. Westra also represented the construction industry as a Chinese ambassador as part of the People to People program.

John Mielke, the current president of Wisconsin, said Westra led the industry’s first effort to provide continuing education and training. This is a big part of ABC’s work today.

“He was literally the founder of our organization. He was the first treasurer,” Mielke said. “We thank Dewey for his efforts.”

Outside of his work, Westra is a member of Gideon, distributing the Bible in Ethiopia for 20 years and volunteering for a Bible translation service, especially in Arizona.
