Conway, South Carolina (WBTW) – Currently, the Conway Police Department has one K9 unit, but if you get enough votes in the grant contest, you can add another unit.

Loco is a mix of 6-year-old German Shepherd and Malinois of Belgium, who joined the Conway police when he finished training five years ago. Executive Richard Callier has been his handler for about a year and a half.

“I spend more time with him than anyone else in the world,” Currier said. “I know the dog better than anyone else in the world. I just know when he is awake and when he is lying down.”

Roko specializes in drug detection, tracking, basic obedience, criminal arrest, and article search.

Conway Police Chief Dale Long said the department would benefit from adding another K9 as the number of K9 calls increased in News13.

Currier and Roko are basically talking 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and Roko can make up to 20 calls during the shift. While another K9 unit could help share the load, Currier also said it would free up time for additional training and community involvement.

“It doesn’t just add to the operational side, it adds to the reach of many communities,” he said. “So if you watch a birthday party by the side of the road, you can stop not only as a police officer, but as a K9 police officer that everyone loves. People love dogs, that’s exactly what it is.”

The Conway Police Station has been nominated for an Aftermath K9 Grant. If this grant is awarded, the police station will be close to $ 25,000 for an additional K9 unit.

Obtaining and training dogs and handlers can cost up to $ 20,000. The division also requires special gear and K9 compliant vehicles, with final prices ranging from $ 60,000 to $ 70,000.

New dogs may be trained for drug detection, suspect tracking, and article searches.
