Washington(NewsNation Now) — A more contagious variant of the novel coronavirus first identified in the United Kingdom is currently the most common strain prevalent in the United States, health officials said Wednesday.

During a regular COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday, Dr. Rachelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the strain, officially known as B.1.1.7, “is currently epidemic in the United States. It is the most common strain that is being used. “

In the United States, British variants have been shown to be particularly contagious and infectious among young Americans, and Warensky said he has contributed to the increase in case numbers in recent weeks.

“These trends show two clear truths. One is that the virus still catches us, infects and harms people. We need to be vigilant. Two need to accelerate vaccination efforts and take personal action. If possible, you are responsible for getting vaccinated, “she said.

Warensky said the new outbreak is linked to youth sports and day care centers. She especially encouraged states with increasing caseloads to reduce or suspend youth sports activities to slow the spread of the virus.

The United States leads the world with 30.8 million confirmed cases and more than 556,000 confirmed deaths.
