After four years of waiting, Corpus Christi will be able to begin repairing a heavily damaged Puckery Channel in October.
Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 collapsed the embankment on the south side of the waterway and its sidewalk, damaging part of the sidewalk on the north side.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the city $ 13.5 million for repairs. Another $ 1.5 million for work will come from the tax increase reinvestment zone on North Padre Island.
The city began bidding for the project on Tuesday. The city council plans to conclude a contract in October. It is estimated that the construction will take about a year.
“After years of relentless effort, we can celebrate this big milestone. Now that we have the money, we can restore the Puckery Channel to make it an asset that residents and visitors will enjoy for years to come. You can, “says Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo.
Built in 2006, the Package Channel is an artificial pass that separates Padre Island and Mustang Island. You can access the sea from around North Padre Island, which connects the canals.

In December, the Army Corps’ Galveston district informed the city that the channel would not be eligible for corps funding because the project had no flood risk management benefits, according to city documents.
In August, the city council took administrative steps to restore the Packery Channel, seeking funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency rather than the Army Corps of Engineers.

In the fall of 2020, the construction of a $ 2.3 million, 100 x 2,500-foot canal on North Padre Island was completed. The waterway will run under the $ 18 million Park Road 22 bridge that the city is building.
