COVID restrictions move millions across borders from Canada – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

Niagara Falls, NY (WKBW) — Buffalo and Niagara Falls are two of the most famous hub cities for people to enter Canada. Visiting Buffalo Patrick Koehler, president of Niagara, said tourism in Canada is a big part of what Western New York sees during the season.

“We usually welcome 35-45% of visits from Southern Ontario and the Toronto area,” says Kaler.

However, in the last few years, the once very high numbers have dropped considerably.

“I’ve been hit a bit by Canadian travelers,” Koehler said.

According to explore.gov, these were the 2019 divisions of people traveling across the border with Canada:

  • Travel by car
  • Train passengers
  • Pedestrian

And these are the 2022 splits.

  • Travel by car
  • Train passengers
  • Pedestrian

“Some of them are still restrictions from the Government of Canada. We are very fortunate that Congressman Higgins is trying to ease these restrictions on our side,” Koehler said.

At a recent press conference, Mr. Higgins said this not only restricted some people’s travel, but also hurt both local economies.

“These ongoing obstacles continue to hurt southern Ontario and western New York,” Higgins said.

At this time, Canada’s COVID restrictions are valid until September 30th. These may be extended again at any time, but Higgins has plans. He wants to work with Canada to ensure that border trips are carried out at their full potential and that both economies are as prosperous as they were before the pandemic.

“We want the government to work together towards the goal of developing a coalition of both the United States and Canada to lift all restrictions on both sides of the border and give a normal feeling. I’m going to do it, “Higgins said.
