Wichita, Kansas 2021-09-21 08:24:08 –
Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said current regulations expose reckless driving when police are considering cracking down on street racing.
Whipple said the problem was that the term was too broad and wasn’t effective in reducing the number of street racing cases we saw last year.
Wichita police have considered how to treat other cities and have determined that certain cities targeting street racing are more effective.
If this ordinance is passed, Wichita police will be able to seize your car or motorcycle. Not only that, if a person is in a private car park and is racing a street, officers may intervene if it is considered dangerous.
The ones currently in place only allow police officers to issue tickets to drivers.
Mayor Whipple believes the ordinance needs to be drafted after three people have died in street races.
“The last thing we want to read or see in the news is that the whole family dies because some people have driven and made really bad decisions,” Whipple said.
Whipple said the stricter penalties hope people take it more seriously.
“We’re having problems with people trying to recreate what they see on TikTok and on social media. By doing so, they’re on our highway and the dangers they face. You may not understand, and others too, “said Whipple.
WPD will present a new ordinance to the city council at a meeting on Tuesday morning.
