Scientists are currently working 24 hours a day to make production more sustainable.

“We harvest about 21,500 cranberries in Wisconsin, which produces 550 million pounds of fruit,” said Tom Lochner of the Wisconsin Cranberry Institute. “This year, weather issues have dropped £ 450.”

According to the USDA, Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries, accounting for more than half of US production in 2020.

At the Wisconsin Cranberry Institute, cranberry production has been low for the past few years.

“A warm spell in the middle of winter melts some of the snow, exposes the plant tissue to cold and wind, and then when it gets really cold, yields can be lost,” Lochner said. .. “It’s what we’ve seen and we’re expecting to see more and more.”

According to Lochner, the research station is experimenting to make cranberry production more sustainable.

“There are many possibilities to unleash the genetics of the cranberry vine itself and consider frost resistance, disease resistance, insect resistance, plant sustainability, etc.,” Lochner said. “Our growers have been growing cranberries since the 1800s and are committed to being environmentally and economically sustainable to pass on to the next generation.”

According to Hillary Sandler of the University of Massachusetts, climate change is the driving force behind production shortages.

“In July of this year, the temperature was high and the rainfall was high, so the conditions were perfect for the fungi to grow,” says Sandler. “And they almost always cause fruit rot.”

That’s why Professor Amaya Atucham of the University of Wisconsin is experimenting to find out how to adapt cranberry plants to cold climates.

“If we can identify a hardy individual, we can mate with other individuals and start a new cultivation that we can provide to growers,” Atucham said. “We do not do GMO. We try to find in diversity. Therefore, it is important to protect the diversity of these plants. They may have strong hardiness. You can find no individuals, and then we can go beyond them and create new ones. “

When it comes to environmental issues, it can get into economic issues little by little. Low production means low economic benefits for farmers.
