After the deadly Amtrak derailment in Missouri on Monday, the National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating what went wrong.
The train broke off the track at an intersection near Mendon, Missouri, after colliding with a dump truck. This is called passive crossing, which means there are no flashing lights or automatic gates.
Throughout the United States, the Federal Railroad Administration states that 44% of the 125,500 public railroad crossings in the United States are passive.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, 53% of train accidents in the state occur at this type of intersection. In particular, it was included in the list for getting safety upgrades, including lights and gates, according to a plan drafted by the Missouri Department of Transportation earlier this year.
Public records reviewed by Newsy do not show records of past accidents at this intersection, but local farmers say they expect this to happen for some time.
“We have made several close calls here,” said farmer Mike Spencer. “There are many stories we can tell about crossing this intersection.”
Spencer posted on Facebook about two weeks ago to warn about intersections and approaches.
According to a federal document on a particular intersection filled out in September 2020, trains reach speeds up to 90 mph and the tracks have warning signs, but no road markings, stop signs, or advance warning signs. ..
Operation Lifesaver, the largest rail safety organization in the United States, is promoting awareness at all intersections, especially those without lights or gates.
Gary Kellner, State Coordinator of Wisconsin Operations Life Saver, said: “You will see signs of surrender, you are supposed to slow down, you are supposed to be ready to stop. Oh yeah, so that you can see the cars flying here To, they aren’t ready to stop. Come on, it would be a kind of surprise to them. “
One expert told Newsy that this happened at a public crossroads. This means that Amtrak trains had to blow off the horn a quarter mile away.
Amtrak said in an email that NTSB investigators were at the scene of an accident that injured 150 people and killed four.
