Boulder, Colorado-After 15 years of debate, the University of Colorado at Boulder has announced the opening of a new African-American Studies Center (CAAAS), also known as “The Cause.”

The center focuses on research, visual arts, performing arts, and student services. The university administrator told Denver 7 that anyone who wants to learn more about black culture can attend.

“As we make African-American studies available to a larger audience, we will often be surprised at how others react to our history, culture and struggle,” Rayland Rabaka said. Told. The new director of the center.

Rabaka, a current CU boulder professor of African-American studies, told Denver7 that many black graduates felt the center was long behind and created during the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He said it should be done. Meanwhile, the university took it.

However, Mr. Rabaka said the Black Lives Matter movement has sparked new interest and support.

“It’s really important for us to respond to what’s happening in society right now. So this center was born out of many years of struggle in the 1960s and 70s, but it’s happening here now. That’s also the case, “says Rabaka.

According to Rabaka, of CU Boulder’s 33,000 students, less than 500 are black. However, the students were able to collect 1,200 signatures to support the center.

“What we did was take a page from the Black Lives Matter movement book … to reach out to many of our white allies. They also want to learn African studies. I also want to study African-American studies, “says Rabaka.

Rabaka said Denver 7’s programming and curriculum ranges from contemporary topics to more traditional themes.

“We provide both a historical focus and a current focus. For example, let’s say you’re teaching a Harlem Renaissance course. We’ll also teach a course of hip-hop movement,” says Rabaka.

CU Boulder is still trying to pinpoint the physical location of the center, but the university hopes to officially open the door by 2022.
