Colorado Springs — Who is ultimately responsible if a car is dropped off at a dealer for repair work and unfortunately the car is stolen?
That’s a question that a military family asked News 5 Investigates to look up because the truck wasn’t found anywhere when they went to pick it up.
Ann Connolly says her husband took the Ford F250 pickup truck to Phil Longford Motor City for warranty repair work, but when it’s time to pick it up a month after unloading the truck, service The team couldn’t find it.
“This was my husband’s dream track,” Anne said. “It was an untouched F250 platinum version.”
According to service records obtained by News 5 Investigates, the car got off on June 3rd.
Ann says her husband calls the dealer every week to check the repair status.
On June 29, Anne says she was told she was ready to pick up the truck when her husband called.
“He paid $ 100 for a deductible guarantee,” Anne said. “They (dealers) had the key. They went looking for a car and told him they couldn’t find it.”
Ann says the dealer spent a considerable amount of time finding it before finally submitting a case report of the stolen vehicle to Colorado Springs police.
“They (dealers) didn’t know where the vehicle was,” she said. “It’s not rational care in my opinion. We trusted them in our car.”
To make matters worse, no one seemed to know the exact date the truck disappeared.
“The only solution for them was for us to file a claim for insurance, which is not a big deal as it is just a compensation (comprehensive) claim,” Anne said. “But I think it’s a big deal because it’s in our record for what we didn’t do.”
Phil Long Ford refused a camera interview, but offered a solution when he contacted them to discuss this case.
The dealer finally offered to pay a potential increase in one-year premiums covered by Anne’s insurance deductions and refund the $ 100 warranty repair work payment.
They also offered Anne and her husband to sell a similar F-250 pickup at the same price as the insurance payment (when it arrived).
The only “catch” is that Anne and her husband have to contact their insurance and make the first claim.
Ann told News 5 that the dealer had kept the vehicle alone at the time of the theft and believed that the dealer should have made the claim first.

She says it’s important for car owners to have comprehensive insurance in situations similar to this — Colorado law does not require it.
If you do not have comprehensive insurance, you may not be covered if your vehicle is stolen.
“When you drop off your car at a car body shop or dealer, you don’t know what kind of insurance you have or what kind of insurance company you have.”
Fortunately, in Anne’s case, her family had comprehensive coverage and they were able to make a claim.

Contacting the insurance company will usually initiate an investigation.

News 5 also asked Walker about signs that could be posted by companies claiming to limit liability or liability in the event of a car being stolen or property damage.
According to Walker, dealers and repair shops may be held liable if something happens, even if they do not perform due diligence or take steps to protect the customer’s car. ..
