Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) —Virginia Beach police are looking for someone throwing a thumbtack into the Shore Drive bike lane.
“As a cyclist, you think about it every time you go out,” said Stephen Bird.
Cyclists are always afraid of big conflicts.
“When the tires blow, all traction is lost,” Bird added.
Only last month there was growing concern about ShoreDrive’s bike lanes.
“July 5th was the first incident I’ve heard,” said cyclist Mark Griffith.
Since then, it’s been a weekly event for someone to end up with a flat tire.
“I looked like myself, and certainly there were two studs sticking out of my tires,” Bird added.
“I didn’t know right away, and then I heard it,” Griffith said.
Someone is throwing a thumbtack into the bike lane.
“Shoredrive scared me now and never before,” Bird added.
The city came out several times and cleaned up the studs. So far, no one has been injured, but cyclists say it’s only a matter of time.
“In a large group of 22 miles per hour, when someone gets off, many can get off and get on the road,” Griffith said. “It can hurt or kill someone.”
It’s not just hardcore cyclists who use Shore Drive.
“I’ve heard that families and children have a flat tire,” Griffith added. “There is nothing interesting about it.”
“If you’re trying to get us off the road, that feels like the wrong solution,” Bride said.
