Auckland — A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder in a shooting that occurred shortly after a 17-year-old boy hit a fellow victim with a pistol during a car robbery interruption.
Tarick Mibet, 23, was charged with murdering 17-year-old Antonio Noriega on April 6.
Police said in court records that at around 1:15 pm on April 6, Noriega drove the other two to 2400 blocks on East 24th Avenue in Auckland, and two companions broke into a parked van. He said he started stealing tools. During the invasion, Myvett, who lives in the block, is said to have taken out his gun and began whipping one of the car robbers with a pistol.
After that, Mibet was alleged to have dropped the gun, and when he bent over to grab the gun, two men ran away and one jumped into the car. After that, Mibet allegedly fired at the vehicle and attacked Noriega. The car traveled a short distance and crashed on 26th Avenue. Noriega died in the hospital later that day.
Noriega reportedly remained in the car throughout the incident.
Mibet admitted to police that he had shot into the car once and claimed that he had fired another 19 bullets in the air. But authorities have reportedly found at least five bullet holes in the vehicle, inconsistent with that claim.
Police did not reveal whether the van belonged to Mibet. During a search for his home, police found a shotgun and assault rifle without a serial number, in addition to a pistol, according to a probable cause statement filed by police in court.
According to court records, Mibet is waiting without bail at Santa Rita Prison in Dublin. He has been there since his arrest shortly after the murder.
