One dead, several missing in fire and explosion in Jersey

An explosion and fire at an apartment building on Jersey’s Channel Island left one person dead and several missing on Saturday, police said.

Jersey Police Chief Robin Smith said at a press conference that “about a dozen” residents were missing after the explosion in the town of St. Helier.

The largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey is a British dominion located off the northern coast of France in the English Channel.

Mr Smith said the three-story building “completely collapsed” and nearby buildings were also damaged. He described the scene as “devastating” and warned that there could be many more deaths.

Firefighters were called to the area after residents reported smelling gas the night before, Smith said.

He said police would investigate “whether there were any safety issues” with the natural gas line.

Police said in a statement that emergency services were performing “important work” at the scene while the fire was being extinguished.

Officials have advised Jersey residents to seek emergency hospital care only in the event of a real medical emergency and to avoid the scene of the blast, which is cordoned off.
